As a parent, you want to do everything you can to give your kid the best start in life. And during the school week, we put our faith in schools to do the same. To sow the seeds for their curiosity about the world.

But how can teachers nourish the minds of children whose stomachs are grumbling because they’ve not had enough to eat? Or how can they get the best out of kids who are not getting all their essential nutrients? Despite our best efforts as parents, research shows only 2% of packed lunches meet nutritional standards our kids need to stay energised for the whole day.

I’m standing together with health experts, teachers and fellow parents to urge the Prime Minister to make this brilliant scheme a reality in every primary school in the country.

I’ve spent a lot of time in schools over the years, and I’ve seen how essential lunch period is. It’s not just about the food—it’s about the social side too. Kids learn so much from each other in the dinner hall. Sharing a meal is a time of connection, where lessons in empathy and socialising take place. For kids, just like adults, it’s a real bonding experience.

This is why the government already funds schools in England to provide school dinners for all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. But the question is, why stop at Year 3 when the evidence shows that this is so good for children and the school community?

Here in London, where the Mayor has extended Free School Meals to all primary kids, my child’s school offers really delicious and nutritious dinners. I was both delighted and impressed when I got to try the food for myself recently one day while volunteering for the school, it tasted so good.

It’s so much healthier to have a hot school dinner over a cold packed lunch. It offers variety, makes food exciting and helps kids set up healthy habits for life. It’s not fair that children across England are missing out on this vital fuel for learning and creativity.

When the National Education Union approached me about supporting their campaign to extend Free School Meals , it was an easy decision. I’m standing together with health experts, teachers and fellow parents to urge the Prime Minister to make this brilliant scheme a reality in every primary school in the country.

If we can get kids right, the future is bright. Let's do all we can to set this and future generations up to excel.
